Biography
Scott Coates, MD, FACS is a board-certified general surgeon and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, known for pairing clinical excellence with deep professional leadership.
Raised in Chanute, Kansas, Dr. Coates attended Neosho County Community College—where his father was an instructor—before earning his undergraduate degree from Kansas State University and his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Dr. Coates has held numerous national leadership roles, including service with the American Board of Surgery as a council member, certifying examination examiner, and Vice Chair of the Continuous Certification Committee. Within the American College of Surgeons, he has served in many capacities, most recently as Governor for the Kansas Chapter, and currently serves as Chair of the Fellows Nominating Committee. He is also a proctor for the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.
In recognition of his commitment to education, professionalism, and service, Dr. Coates has received multiple honors from the University of Kansas Medical Center, including Volunteer Faculty Member and Ad Astra awards for excellence and professionalism in medicine.
He currently serves as Chief of Medical Staff at Labette Health. Outside of medicine, Dr. Coates is proud of his family—his wife, Robynn, and daughters, Sophie and Belle—and remains deeply connected to the Kansas communities he serves.
