A Century of Care: The History of Wilson Medical Center

Wilson Medical Center has proudly served the Neodesha community for over a century as a trusted regional medical center and Kansas hospital. Our story began in 1913, when Dr. John Moorhead and Dr. T. Blakeslee led a successful grassroots legislative campaign in Topeka to authorize the creation of county hospitals in Kansas.

In December 1916, Wilson Medical Center officially opened its doors. Dr. Moorhead admitted the hospital’s first patient, a local cement plant employee. This marked the beginning of a long-standing commitment to quality, compassionate care. In its early years, the facility was also known as a nurse’s training school, a role it filled until March 1937.

Over the decades, the hospital underwent numerous renovations and improvements to meet the evolving needs of the community, providing quality care. A major milestone came on November 7, 2006, when construction began on a new, state-of-the-art facility at 2600 Ottawa Road. In December 2007, a new name was announced to accompany the move.

On February 20, 2008, patients were officially transferred to the new location, and Wilson Medical Center bid farewell to its original site at 205 Mill Street, concluding 91 years of service at that location. This move solidified our position as a modern health care center with enhanced capabilities to better serve Neodesha and the surrounding region.

Today, Wilson Medical Center continues its mission as a county-owned, not-for-profit critical access hospital and health clinic, offering advanced medical care while honoring a rich legacy of service and innovation.
