Roots Run Deep: Wilson Medical Center Secures $1.55M State Grant to Transform Rural Health Care in Neodesha

Wilson Medical Center is proud to announce it has been selected as a recipient of a $1,555,143 grant through the Kansas Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP), administered by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The award, part of a sweeping $79.1 million investment in rural health care announced statewide today, will fund critical capital improvements — including a long-anticipated renovation of Neodesha Family Medicine, Wilson Medical Center’s rural health clinic serving the heart of Southeast Kansas.
Wilson Medical Center was selected through KDHE’s Rural Emergency Hospital Conversion and Transformative Capital Investment Program (REH/CAP), a highly competitive grant process that evaluated applicants on community need, long-term financial sustainability, and innovation in rural health care delivery. Of the 72 applications submitted statewide, Wilson Medical Center stood among just 17 organizations awarded funding — a testament to the strength of its vision and its deep commitment to the people it serves. “This investment is about far more than brick and mortar. Funds will be directed toward transformation, including a renovation of Neodesha Family Medicine to expand primary care capacity, expanded laboratory services, and emergency stabilization equipment upgrades. The improvements are designed to expand capacity, enhance the patient experience, and create an environment where clinical teams can deliver the highest standard of primary care. The project reflects Wilson Medical Center’s broader mission to keep Southeast Kansans healthy close to home—reducing the financial and logistical burdens of traveling to larger urban centers for routine and preventive care.
The RHTP is a federally supported, five-year initiative channeling $50 billion nationally into state health care systems, with Kansas receiving the sixth-highest award in the country. The program’s goals align closely with Wilson Medical Center’s own strategic priorities: strengthening preventive care, enhancing provider sustainability, and deploying innovative models that improve outcomes while holding down costs.
